CWA/NVTU/TPFR Fish With a Member Day – Shad Fishing on the Potomac

Loading Events

Come fish for shad on the Potomac with Northern Virginia Trout Unlimited, Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders, and Chesapeake Women Anglers.

Where to Meet: Fletcher’s Boat House located at 4940 Canal Rd, NW, Washington, DC 20016

We will meet at the far end of the lower parking lot at Fletcher’s Cove, which is due south of the Fletcher’s Cove Boat House Tackle Shack.

The Plan: Fishing will be either from shore or by renting a boat.

Keep in mind that wading the Potomac River is not only unsafe but illegal. Water levels can also rise drastically in inclement weather.

From Shore – The option will be yours to either fly fish or spin fish from shore either upstream or downstream of Fletcher’s Cove. Anglers experienced at targeting shad from shore will help guide participants to the safest spots to reach migrating shad from shore.

Renting a Boat – Participants can also rent boats from Fletcher’s Boat House Tackle Shack at their own expense.  Rentals are available for 1-4 hours. Reservations are strongly encouraged and may be made by booking online at https://boatingindc.com/fletchers-boathouse/.

Gear: Hip boots will suffice, but waders may keep you warmer if the temperature drops.  A six or seven weight rod with sinking tip line or full sinking line is recommended.  Clousers and specific shad flies/darts are recommended patterns.  A valid D.C. fishing license will be needed to fish the Potomac from the District side.

**For those that would like to learn effective roll casting with a sinking line on a fly rod or two-handed rod from shore, the TPFR Casting Church on Sunday, March 10, would be the perfect opportunity to do so. TPFR Casting Church is held at Fletcher’s Cove beginning at 8 am on the second Sunday of each month.

**A social event is planned following the fishing. All interested in grabbing an adult beverage afterwards are welcome to meet at the Irish Inn at Glen Echo at 6119 Tulane Ave, Glen Echo, MD 20812.

**Please download and complete the NOVATU FWAM waiver form (new for 2024) using the link below.  The form can be completed electronically and emailed to us at FWM@novatu.org. Alternatively, you can bring the completed form directly to the meeting point. This is the same form all participants sign at their first FWAM trip each year. It is not required for future trips during the same calendar year.
