CWA Volunteers Needed – Girl Scouts Stream Girls Event

Loading Events

The northern Virginia chapter of Trout Unlimited (NVATU) is looking for CWA volunteers  for its Stream Girls event.  This TU national program is designed to introduce Cadette Girl Scouts (age 12-13) to fresh water conservation and fly fishing.  CWA volunteers would provide female role models and mentors for the day in fly tying, fly fishing, and water reading.

To earn a Stream Girls patch, the Girl Scout will need to complete 8 activities:

1.    STREAM Walk
2.    Fly casting
3.    Go with the Flow!
4.    Macroinvertebrate survey
5.    Fly tying
6.    STREAM scavenger hunt and bracelets
7.    Some amount of reflection throughout
8.    Some amount of discussion throughout

There are half and whole day volunteer opportunities to assist with macro invertebrate sampling, a stream/habitat walk, as well as fly tying, casting, and fishing. The role of helping the Scouts one on one with each of these activities is more important than the volunteers’ level of proficiency at any individual activity, though we are always looking for activity leaders who possess or wish to develop special expertise.

*If anyone has experience with or contacts in the National Capital Girl Scout Council, we need all the help we can get with “recruiting” 14 Cadet age Scouts as participants, ASAP (contact Maryan Smith)!

Where: Locust Shade Park in Triangle VA

When: Saturday, March 16, 2024 from 10am-6pm
