Kathy Harding and Norma Kawecki, two of our experts on the Monocacy River, will be fishing there in the evening on 23 July. They will be meeting at the Devilbiss Boat Ramp, Devilbiss Bridge Road, Thurmont, MD, at 4:30 for some bass and bluegill fishing and have agreed to show a small group of fly fishers their secret fishing places on the river. The trip is limited to 6 additional CWA fishers and will strictly follow the Covid guidelines for social distancing. Unfortunately, because of the Covid restrictions, Kathy and Norma will not be able to assist beginners on this trip. Participants are asked to bring their own fishing equipment, flies, snacks and drinks. Recommended equipment: 5wt or 6wt rod, 8.5 or 9 foot; 1 or 2 leaders (7.5 feet, 4X or 3X). Flies that have worked nicely in the past include bead head woolly buggers (black and olive), Golden retrievers, poppers (white, black and chartreuse), grasshoppers, stimulators, and large caddis flies (size 12). Waders are optional since it will be warm in the evening but wading boots, old sneakers, or water shoes (closed toe) are suggested. Bug spray would also be a good idea. A wading staff is not necessary but may be helpful. You will need a Maryland Fresh Water Fishing License that can be purchased on line at https://compass.dnr.maryland.gov
If you would like to join this evening of fishing, please sign up below. Sign up will be first come, first served. There are no bathroom facilities at the river so please stop in Frederick before coming to the river. The Monocacy floods out very easily. Kathy and Norma will be monitoring the situation and will send updates as needed.
Directions: The area Kathy and Norma are going to fish is located north of Fredrick, MD, off Route 15. You may want to Google the Devilbiss Boat Ramp on the Monocacy River before your trip.
Take Route 15 North out of Frederick toward Thurmont.
Take a right turn on Devilbiss Bridge Rd. It is a right turn after you pass the Tractor Supply Store on the right.
At the stop sign go straight, crossing over Old Frederick Rd.
