October 5th gave us perfect weather for our 2019 Fall Fling party as well as great conditions for fishing on the Monocacy River. Most of the members who attended the party set off right away with rods and reels to check out the fish. The rest of us remained behind in the Pinecliff Park pavilion to prepare a BBQ for our hungry fishers. Katherine Farley, our own Vice-President and Master BBQ chef, treated us to some mighty fine burgers and hot dogs to accompany the big pot luck picnic we had all assembled.
Since it was also our 25th anniversary celebration for CWA, we ordered a cake that was to have had five photos representing special events in our history. Imagine our surprise when the bakery presented the cake for pick up with a photo of Carol Stevenson’s neighbor and his girlfriend under the banner “Happy 25th Birthday CWA.” After many apologies, the bakery fixed the cake by placing our photos on top of the previous display, creating a layer cake twice over. Our celebration continued through the afternoon until dark. While the fish were not exactly jumping on our flies, our fishers were successful in catching a good number of bass and bluegill both upstream and downstream. Bonnie Harper and Amy Holstein stayed until the very end of the day and hit a honey hole down by the bridge where they caught several dozen bluegill.
Carol, our President, held a short membership meeting to introduce our newly re-designed web site that now enables our members to pay their dues and sign up for trips on line. Kudos to our wonderful web site designer, Paul Hartman, from Computer Engineering Group in Baltimore, who did a magnificent job patiently listening to all of our ideas and incorporating them into a web site that is easy to navigate. Carol also reminded members that it’s time to elect a new group of leaders for CWA. The two-year term of the current board and committee chairs will end in January. We are looking for volunteers to join the CWA leadership team in the capacity of President, Vice-President, Outings Chair, and Programs/Special Events Chair. We have been fortunate throughout our history to have had so many enthusiastic and talented leaders guiding CWA. Please help us continue our support for our very unique fly fishing community in the Chesapeake region. We need your ideas and energy to move forward and grow.
